榖物很早就被當成貨幣使用。美索不達米亞於西元前三千年曾出現「麥元」，一碗（約一公升）的大麥穀粒稱為 1 席拉（sila），以此為單位支付工資、購買其他食物。
Grains have long been used as currency. Three thousand years ago, the “barley dollar” appeared in Mesopotamia, a bowl of barley grains was one sila, and was the basic unit in wage payments, and used in purchasing other items of food.
